|
| |
| Making
a Difference |

| What
is a Mentor? |
A
Mentor IS: a trusted friend a good listener
a role model and advocate
A Mentor is NOT: a
therapist, a preacher or a probation officer |
| |
| Who
is Matched with the Volunteers? |
Adult
consumers from PPMH: ages 18-79. The clients are struggling
with mental illness such as schizophrenia or depression.
They need help in developing appropriate life coping skills
such as budgeting, social skills and job search techniques.
Most of the clients that are matched with the volunteers
live in group homes or on their own and are employed. |
| |
| Why
Volunteer? |
There
is a shortage of Volunteers to be matched with the adult
consumers of our community. There is a need for the consumers
to have a person that they can interact with on a weekly
basis. Many of the consumers have been shunned by their family
or friends and they are lonely individuals; they need a person
to talk with or a person to be their friend. |
| |
| What
is the Commitment? |
| Four
hours a month for one year. |
| |
| What
Do We Do Together? |
Matched
according to interests, some of the mentors meet for coffee,
shop together or they go on hikes together. They may play
pool or attend church services. |
